The exam will be in the form of questions and answers.

Each exam will include:

  • Moji Goi (Vocabulary)
  • Listening
  • Grammar
  • Reading

Each section will have a time limit, which will be specified for each subject.

A passing score of 60% is required for each subject.

JLPT N5 Exam Tips

Just starting your Japanese journey? The JLPT N5 is your first milestone. These tips will help you pass with confidence and build a strong foundation.

📝 1. Understand the Test Format

The JLPT N5 includes three sections:

  • Language Knowledge (Vocabulary) – ~20 minutes
  • Language Knowledge (Grammar & Reading) – ~40 minutes
  • Listening – ~30 minutes

You’ll need around:

  • 800–1,000 vocabulary words
  • 100–150 kanji

Examples:

  • Numbers (一、二、三…)
  • Days of the week (月、火、水…)
  • Daily life words (学校、先生、ごはん)

👉 Tip: Use flashcards and review a little every day with apps like Anki, LingoDeer, or Memrise.


📚 3. Learn Core Grammar

Some must-know grammar patterns:

  • です / ます form
  • 〜は〜です (A is B)
  • 〜の (possessive)
  • 〜が好きです (like something)
  • 〜ましょう (let’s do…)

👉 Tip: Write simple sentences using each grammar point to reinforce them.


👂 4. Train Your Ears for Listening

The N5 listening section is simple but fast for beginners.

  • You’ll hear conversations at stores, schools, homes
  • Questions test your ability to catch the main idea

👉 Tip: Listen to slow Japanese audio daily—YouTube, beginner podcasts, or apps with JLPT practice audio.


📖 5. Practice Reading Simple Sentences

Reading materials include:

  • Notices
  • Short conversations
  • Very basic paragraphs

👉 Tip: Use graded readers (level 0–1), NHK Easy News, or children’s books with furigana to practice.


📅 6. Create a Simple Study Plan

Example (30 mins/day):

  • 🉐 10 mins vocab review
  • 📚 10 mins grammar
  • 👂 10 mins listening or reading

👉 Tip: Consistency is more important than long study sessions!
